When You're Told That You'll Never Be Enough

What started off as a friendly afternoon lunch with my friends, ended with us on the floor in the middle of a two-day siege between local rebels and the military in Venezuela. With mattresses on the window to prevent stray bullets from entering my apartment, I vowed to do whatever it took to get out.

I managed to sell everything that I could and bought a ticket to the United States. As I traveled across the water to Detroit, Michigan, I didn’t have much. I had some clothes, some pictures of family and ten dollars. When I arrived, I had to take a bus and when the ticket agent told me the cost, I just lost it. I broke down in tears out of sheer exhaustion and of course, frustration. I’ll never forget his kindness as he allowed me to ride for free. That moment of grace, I’ll never forget.
